IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FIFTH GRADE
COMMUNICATION - Email is the fastest and easiest way for me to keep in contact with you. If you do not check email daily, please let me know so that I can send home hard copies of mass e-mails. My web page is updated weekly and contains everything you need to know about what is going on in the classroom (events, test dates, spelling words and vocabulary).
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS - Your child will receive a list of spelling and vocabulary words at the beginning of each reading lesson. They will have a spelling test and reading test at the end of each reading lesson. The reading test will assess skills covered during weekly instruction, as well as the vocabulary words. Assessments will be administered every fifth day. You may check the websites for test dates. Please be sure to check regularly for specific details.
PLANNERS - Students are responsible for writing all homework assignments in their planner daily. Please sign your child's planner nightly after you have reviewed their work.
LUNCH - Please make sure your child has lunch money everyday, or pay in advance. There will be no lunch charges. Please remember that applications for free and reduced lunch must be filled out each year. You may send lunch money to school, or keep track with your child’s account on “MealPay Plus.” The information for that program should have been given to you in your registration packet.
P.E. - Students need to wear appropriate shoes and clothing for P.E.
TRANSPORTATION - If your child needs to do something other than what you specified on the transportation form, you must send a note, email us, or call the school before 2:00 p.m. If I have not responded to your email, please assume I have not checked or received it and call the office immediately to make changes.
GRADES - Grades are posted to the computer weekly. You can check your child's grades through STI at any time. Tests in all subject areas are weighted more heavily than classwork and homework.
GRADED PAPERS - Each Tuesday, I will send home graded papers with a conduct sheet for you to look over and sign to show that you have seen them. The papers will come home in a Lakewood folder. There will also be an AR update with your child's current points earned and percentage correct on AR tests. Please sign and return all of the papers the next day.
MATH – One essential element to be successful in fifth grade math is knowing basic multiplication facts AUTOMATICALLY. Students must be able to answer facts quickly without counting on their fingers. Later in the year we will begin working on the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and finally division of fractions. These are important skills that are required of all fifth graders. Please begin now working with your child daily on their multiplication facts. This is essential for your child to be successful in math.
MATH HOMEWORK - The students will have math homework nearly every night. We will review homework the following day in class to correct any common misconceptions and answer students' questions. Homework assignments will be graded and returned to you each Tuesday in the student's folder. Upcoming tests and the lessons that they cover are posted to the website weekly.
ABSENCES AND MAKE UP WORK – All absences require a written excuse from a parent or doctor that should be sent to school on the day the student returns. Students will be given a sheet documenting their missed assignments and they will have three days to complete and submit the work.
HOMEWORK - Please assist your child with homework to assure adequate practice on skills that have been taught in class. Your child will be responsible for copying the homework assignment into their planner each afternoon. Homework should be completed before returning to class the next day. Any work not completed in class will need to be completed as well. We do not accept late work in the fifth grade. Failure to submit homework when it is due will result in a grade of zero.
EXTRA CREDIT - As a group, fifth grade teachers do not assign "extra credit" work. Students are expected to complete assignments as they are given and turn them in on time. We do not give extra credit work to make up for a missing assignment or poor test grade. In order to prepare students for sixth grade, we ask them to be responsible students and accountable for all classwork and homework.
